House Swap with us

Hi, we are Kym and Jane, a retired and semi-retired couple who enjoy bushwalking, gardening, the natural environment, cooking, reading and art house movies. When we visit the city we love to go to art galleries, museums, restaurants and live shows. Exploring Australia and overseas travel have always been a high priority. We would like to visit regional areas and the major cities. Melbourne (north-eastern suburbs) is a desirable destination as our daughter and her family live there and we would love to see a lot more of them. We live in tropical Kuranda, generally regarded as the mountain suburb of Cairns. It is a tourist town with lots of local attractions and is well located for visiting Cairns, the Atherton Tableland, the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree rainforest and much more. We are a house proud couple and would look after other people's homes as we do our own.

The House

The House

Our timber home is on a one hectare block of beautiful rainforest. It has two bedrooms with queen and king size beds, two modern bathrooms, office, sewing room and an open plan living area where there is a large reverse cycle AC that comfortably services the whole house. We have NBN, Telstra 4G and an internet-connected Smart TV. A large, open paved area under the house accommodates the laundry, barbeque and pool table. The house has a huge veranda that looks over terraced gardens to the rainforest. There is a large carport next to Kym's workshop, a small, raised kitchen garden with an auto-sprinkler system and a big poly rainwater tank.

The things we love about living here

  • Kuranda has a pleasant climate that is cooler and less humid than the coast due to its location on top of the ranges behind Cairns.
  • The town is surrounded by rainforest, which is home to a large variety of tropical birds, agile wallabies, pademelons (small rainforest wallaby), possums, lizards and frogs.
  • Lots of walking tracks nearby.
  • Easy drive to Cairns, the Atherton Tableland, National Parks, Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation and much more.
  • Village atmosphere with all the essential shops and services as well as tourist attractions and restaurants.

Kuranda Springs, our locale, is divided into approximately one hectare blocks on a no-through-road with underground power and no street lights. We live six kilometres from the centre of town.
Kuranda has lots of tourist attractions and is well located for visiting the Tablelands and the coast. The town is situated at the top of the Kuranda Range on the Barron River and is 30K from Cairns. It is only a short distance to Smithfield at the bottom of the range where there is a large shopping centre, Dan Murphys, Event Cinema, Bunnings and a wide range of homewares, light industrial, camping and assorted businesses. There are also beautiful beaches and tourist attractions along the coast heading toward Port Douglas.

We had a fabulous swap with Jane and Kym and loved their house on the edge of the rainforest in lovely Kuranda. A beautiful home full of lovely artistic carved furniture and super comfy and high set so you feel like you are in the tree tops. Such a relaxing environment. The car swap at the airports at each end was super easy and convenient and we had lots of info on hand to learn about the area and explore. We loved taking a trip to the Atherton tablelands and Palm Cove, enjoyed the Kuranda scenic railway, and had some beautiful walks around the area. Kyms vege garden was a gem for stealing some greens from to enjoy. Kuranda is full of attractions...bird park, koala sanctuary, and butterfly house, and busy markets. Our house was spotless upon return...we highly recommend an exchange with Jane and Kym if you have the opportunity and we would love to swap again and continue to explore this glorious tropical part of Australia.

Jane from HURSTBRIDGE VIC (Nov 2023)

We had a very enjoyable stay at Jane & Kym's rainforest retreat. The grounds are set amongst tall trees making for a very private stay. Home was spacious with all the amenities, great national parks nearby. We also loved the bathroom with shower overlooking trees. Wonderful vegie garden and not far from Kuranda, it was the perfect place to relax. Jane and Kym were great to deal with and kept very good care of our home! Thanks!
